Why You Must Set Goals to Improve your Self-Esteem

What are goals and why do we need them. Goals are targets for you to reach, things for you to aim for, obstacles for you to overcome or a destination for you to reach. Why are they important? Read on and find out.

How can you reach a destination if you don’t know what or where it is. Imagine living in the USA and wanting to get to England but you have no idea where England is, you don’t even know that you need to take a boat or a plane to get there because you’ve never even heard of England before.

How hard would it be to reach this destination? I’d say near to impossible wouldn’t you? You may stumble on it through shear luck. Maybe you wondered into an airport one day and saw the flight information on the screen but the odds on this are slim to none. This is why goals are so important.

To have a real goal you must have a plan. You must know where you’re going, how you’re going to get there and most importantly why you want to reach the goal in the first place. We’ve already dealt with the first one, you can’t reach a destination if you don’t know where you’re going.

The only part we haven’t dealt with is how specific your goals need to be. ‘I want to make lots of money’ isn’t good enough. ‘I want to make 1 million dollars in the next five years’. Now that’s the type of goal you want to be setting. It’s specific, punchy and straight to the point.

Secondly you need a plan. This doesn’t need to be too specific at first as it will constantly change throughout the process of reaching your goal. It’s like a boat cruising across the open water. On it’s way to it’s destination it is off course about 90 percent of the time and it makes minuscule changes all the way to it’s final port. Just like you’ll make changes to your plan on the way to reaching your goal

You may even find that half way to reaching your goal the destination itself will change, either slightly or become an entirely different goal altogether.

Finally the most important part. You must know why you want to reach your goal. If you don’t know this, if you don’t have a strong enough reason for accomplishing your goal then your chances of success are greatly reduced. It needs to be a reason that only the thought of will elicit a strong emotional response.

Ideally you should have two reasons. One must involve all of the great things that will happen once you’ve achieved your goal, list all of these great things and give them a positive emotional strength. The other should involve all of the things that will happen if you don’t achieve your goal, give all of those bad things a negative emotional strength so when you think of what will happen if you fail it instantly motivates you succeed.

How to Improve Self Esteem?

Self esteem is important for any individual to achieve his goal. We all want success and to make success, we need to be confident in ourselves. Self esteem is something more than self confidence. You have to respect and trust yourself. If you want to others to look at you with high values, you have to first value yourself high. At many circumstances, you might have faced failures that hurt your self esteem. Improving self esteem is not a tough task and you should always try to improve yourself to work much better. The first step to improving self esteem is, believing that you are able to make the change exactly as you wish. Bringing about the change may take some time, but trust yourself that you are not powerless. We all have an inner critic that always posts negative thoughts. The mistakes in you that are not identified by others are known to the inner critic. If you have done something wrong that others didn’t notice, your inner self will criticize you for making that mistake. This is the time you have to confute the critic and tell to yourself that you have done a good job. Ofcourse, you are obliged to correct your mistakes but that doesn’t mean that you have done a bad job.Take care of yourself which will help you improve your self esteem. If you feel that you are not in good shape and that is defying your confidence, then you nurture yourself and start eating healthily. You deserve a special healthy meal and regular exercises for keeping you fit. All the negatives in your mind can be eradicated if you take more care for yourself. As you do this, you will start loving yourself and find improvements in your self esteem. Getting help from others will help you greatly improve your self esteem. Write down everything that you love about you and ask your friends to pen down the things that they like in you. You can also your well-wisher to do the same. After reading their points, you will find that you have many good qualities that are appreciated by others. A person with many good qualities can easily bring the changes and turn his weakness to strengths. Believe that you are powerful and you can reach your goals with proper planning. If you feel too low, seek the help of a counselor to improve your self esteem.

A Revolutionary Plan for Resolutions

Even the language we use when describing our goals can set us up for failure. For 2009 are you resolving to never be late again; to always keep your office organized; to clean your entire house every week; or keep the weight off forever? Words like never, always, entire, every, and forever are strong words and make for lofty goals. The idea of making resolutions is not to defeat yourself before you begin, but language like the above can lead to quick failure. Let’s look at what some may consider to be a revolutionary plan for making resolutions. Realize that our successes come with small steps and consistent one day at a time endeavors. In fact, I like to view the entire month of January as a “ramp up” period for resolutions. My thoughts are that October through December people are just too overwhelmed to devote quality time to making resolutions. After New Year’s is over, we can sit down and decide what our goals are and how we can best make a plan for implementation. Here’s a week by week plan to help ensure success with your resolutions. January 1 – 7 Decide on up to six goals. If you’re making a list of more than six, you’re likely to look at your list and say, “Good grief, When will I have time to get to all of these?” After making the list, prioritize your list by deciding your top 3 and then your bottom 3. This doesn’t mean that the bottom 3 are not important., but there are probably some items that are more important than others. For example, losing weight, stopping smoking, or getting out of a dangerous relationship are health and safety concerns and become your first priorities. If your goal is to be honest, that too should be a priority as that is a moral issue. As Stephen Covey says: “Success is also relationships improved and higher character, competence, credibility, judgment, and influence. Success is change for the better.” Remember that it’s what’s important to you and your quality of life that we’re talking about here. Those around you will benefit from the positive changes in due time. So make your list, you have an entire week to decide on your goals and to prioritize them. One important factor is to be honest with yourself about whether or not you’re committed to making a change in the areas you’ve selected. If you’re not ready, again, you will only be inviting defeat. Take your time and enjoy this part of the resolution making process because next week will be a busy one. January 8 – 14 This is the week you want to look at how to best implement your resolutions. If you’ll need help with some, this is the week to conduct some research and find the best resources for help in achieving your goals. If stopping smoking is a goal, you may want to research various methods and/or doctors to help you in your quest. If your goal is to work out on a regular basis, then you might want to research the best programs and equipment for your lifestyle. Decide if you’re going to need to go to a gym, or find a partner to share your work out time. If you decide you have the will power to do it on your own, then you might decide if you’re going to work out to a video or find some place safe near your home or office to walk or run. Or you may already have equipment you’ve been using to hang clothes on that you can convert back to it’s original intended use. You may need to make a special place in your home for your equipment and work out time where you won’t be interrupted. This is also the week to decide how you’ll reward yourself for accomplishing your goals and when those rewards will be indulged. If losing weight is your goal, decide at what weight loss levels you’ll receive your reward. And, no, eating a whole lemon meringue pie is not a good choice for a reward. If you’ve decided to stop using profanity, the reward might be indulged in on a weekly basis and then stretched out over time as you become more successful at reaching your goal. This is also a good week to decide that you will not beat yourself up if failure occurs. Decide exactly what you’ll say to yourself to avoid using negative self-talk. This is important – write your positive affirmations down so you’ll remember them. You may want to post them somewhere so you can see them everyday. Stephen Covey conveys this idea more eloquently:

Week 15 – 21 Finally! This is the week you begin practicing your resolutions. You’ve already done a lot of prep work and your mind has been put on alert that changes are coming so there will be no shocking shifts to your mind, body or psyche. Each morning, before getting out of bed, think about your resolutions and your goal for each of them that day. Practice each resolution at every opportunity. At the end of the week take a look at what you have or haven’t accomplished. If rewards are in order – enjoy! Examine any roadblocks and how they might be eliminated for next week. Look at what changes might need to be made to make it easier to achieve your goals. There may be some tool you’ve discovered you require, you may decide that a buddy system for some goals is in order, or you may need to do some additional research. Remember, no negative self-talk. Find some way to encourage yourself to keep moving toward your dreams. Week 22 – 31 You should be well on your way to reaching your goals. This week you may introduce some new tools or research into your routine. Again keep preparing your mind each morning and continue practicing your resolutions at every opportunity. This week review your progress on a daily basis. Continue on for the next month with practice and review and you’ll be well on your way to success. Lessons From a Revolutionary It was Benjamin Franklin that first taught us that it only takes 21 days to achieve a new habit. So new behaviors can be achieved in a relatively short time by implementing and working the Revolutionary Plan for your Resolutions and Revolutionizing your life!

Happy New Year!!!

Development of your Personal Get Up and Go

Are you a procrastinator? Do you hold yourself back from achieving the things you want to achieve in life because you never get round to starting/ Or, are you the type of person who starts many projects but finishes none?

Would you be interested in learning a simple, effective and easy to to try method for eliminating your tendency to procrastinate? If so, then prepare to become one of those elite individuals who always finishes what they start and someone who always gets the job done!

The first step to eliminating procrastination is to identify the things that need to be done. This should be approached on a daily basis. Start by making a simple list that outlines all the key actions you should take for the coming day in order to get the results you want.

Now go down your list and number them in order of importance. Beside the most important activities place the number 1 and beside the lesser important activities place the number 2, and depending on how large your list is you may want to include a number 3 category. That is, number 1 being the most important and number 2 being the second most important. Have at least two activities that fall into your number 1 category and at least two that fall into number 2 and number 3 categories.

Try to be realistic. When I first started using this method I would place up to 20 items on my to-do list. This was far too much. I had been a procrastinator all my life and to expect myself to complete a list of 20 to-do items was asking the impossible. I soon realised that if I started with a list of 4 or 6 things to do, I would complete all of them. Eventually I upgraded to an A4 size blank diary and almost everyday the pages are filled and tasks completed.

Try to vary the activities as much as possible. This way you will stop yourself from becoming bored with monotonous tasks and you will also keep your motivation high as you see yourself moving forward in different areas.

On your list rearrange the items so that your number 1 priority activities are at the start, the next is your number 2 and so on. Leave a space next to the item and underneath it leave a few lines.

Once you have your list in numbered sequence write beside each one the best time of day for starting the activity. In this way you can stay focused on the jobs that you have decided are important. You also have a set time by which you must begin a task so that you do not put it off until the end of the day – when it probably won’t get done!

Now ensure that you take each of your priority 1 items in turn and tick them off after you do it at the time you specified. In the space beneath, write down a quick description of your feelings. How does it feel now that you have completed the tasks you assigned for yourself. Then reward yourself with a small treat. Anything that you feel is a small treat will do, whether it’s just a cup of coffee, bit of chocolate or a piece of cake.

After you have finished your tasks that have a number 2 rating use the same procedure as mentioned above. When you have finished the task ensure you place a tick beside it on your list and write down in the space below the feelings you have now you have completed it. Ensure you give yourself a special treat after you complete this category. Chose a treat that you would not have under normal circumstances. Pick a treat that you only have occasionally at special events or the like. You have really broken through your procrastination and have made real strides in your development of your personal motivation. Keep in mind that it is usually the anticipation of the activity that causes you discomfort and not the activity itself. I find that once I start an activity it becomes relatively easy to finish it.

Also ensure you give yourself a break. Give yourself a break. The length of time you take should depend on the taks you have just completed. Even if the tasks are not at all demanding it is always advisable to set, at least, a few minutes aside to rest and look over what you have achieved. A good time to do this is when you are rewarding yourself.

The plan/do/reward approach to eliminating procrastination works! Use it and you will soon be filling out and completing lists that right now would seem impossible for you to stick to and more importantly you will see the results of your action sin your life. Your personal development will be assured!

Common Barriers to Personal Growth and Development

Do you find yourself striving to move forward, but constantly getting nowhere? You most likely have barriers to personal growth and development that you probably not even be aware of. Alot of people have these barriers that hold them back and deny them the achievement of their personal or career goals. Regardless of the nature of your barriers, it’s possible to overcome the obstacles and achieve your goals with some simple adjustments to your lifestyle and mindset.
Probably the most common barrier to personal growth and development is your own imagination. How much you can accomplish is only limited by your vision and determination to accomplish it. If you think that you can’t accomplish something, then most likely you won’t accomplish it. On the other hand, with a positive attitude and positive thoughts about your success, and the proper effort, you will succeed. It’s amazing how much of a difference a positive attitude can actually make. It can really be that simple.
Another common barrier to personal growth and development is past failures or events. Often our past failures or bad events in our lives get in the way of future growth and development. We reminisce about past failures and this often hampers our attempts to achieve new goals. It’s normal for our minds to flash back to such events, but only by moving past them can we truly grow as people and in our careers. We have to put aside our past negative incidents so that we can accomplish our future goals. Dwelling on the past will get us nowhere.
Another common barrier is our support systems, or lack there of. Negative or non-supportive messages from family, friends, and co-workers will only bring us down. Surrounding yourself with people who are like minded and striving for success in their careers and lives will help you to do the same.
Whether you get support from an organized group, your friends, or your family makes no difference. The support that you get, the motivational pep talks and the shoulder to cry on when things go wrong will help you keep going when things get tough. A strong support system is an important part of helping you to achieve your goals and overcome your barriers to personal growth and development.
A less common barrier to personal growth and development is the lack of planning. Many people go through life taking only what is handed to them. They settle for the mundane and don’t bother to set goals or strive to exceed beyond the norm. Setting goals, designing a blueprint to reach those goals, and making a timeline for success is a vitally important and often ignored barrier.
Remember, whatever your personal barriers to personal growth and development, you can overcome them. Any person who sets goals, creates a timeline for success, has adequate support, and strives for excellence can overcome these barriers and achieve the success that everyone deserves.
If you need further assistance in personal growth and development, there’s a lot of information on the internet or in books through your local library or your favorite online book store. If you feel you need some professional guidance, you can also find personal development coaches, career development profiles, and other personal growth and development tools.

Self Development, Personal Productivity

Personal development goes a long way in modifying productivity. Human ideas rapidly shifts between levels of grief, guilt, anxiousness, joy, love and courage. While individuals pop in and out of these levels, there is usually a predominant state for everyone. An increase in productivity in metaphysical terms pertains to a flow of clarity and strength deep within the heart one self which translates into their speech, mind and actions.
Productivity is nothing but an unblocked flow whose result transforms into the material world as wealth. Anything that saps your power and robs you of focus stems this flow. Time management is a crucial component in personal productivity and how you manage your time can make or break you. The great dynamic entity that time is leaves no time for procrastination. The ultimate weapon human possess against this virtually indestructible enemy is planning. Most individuals commit the mistake of drafting plans that would require an android to execute.
Art of Time Management
An appropriate time management plan is one which is practical and realistic. Most time management plans bites the dust due to it is drafted without considering the human factor. Humans unluckily have a labyrinth of internal resistances comprising of doubt, fear and procrastination.
Even the best of the time management program fails miserably if it fails to address both the mental and physical reason why you get stuck. Once an individual realizes where he/she is spending the time it unlatches the door that separates the unconscious habits and the conscious. Time logging is another useful option which traces where you have been wasting the resources.
Cultivating A Desire
All great success stems from a simple desire or an idea. What Absolutely fuels these ideas into reality is the power of desire. An idea can render you a partial moment of satisfaction but it is the desire that is going to help you fight the inevitable hardships. Individuals who cultivate a burning desire are on a drive and would go to any length to see their goal met. Every thing is nice and good when the riding the crest of a wave, it is when the wave crashes and you are left a total wreck that the power of your desire gets tested. A glittering desire is an infinite source of inspiration from which one can draw from even at the depths of desperation and hopelessness.
All said and done, systems are great, templates are good and plans are well drafted. But if they do not suit you or your situation, you are pretty much back to square one. Trying to fit into someone’s shoes cripples your capacity, leaving you sore.
Personal development is best mirrored with an analogy of our existence. If one examines the events that took place for us to be brought into existence at this exact moment in time. The whole series of happenings just seems a freak accident that should have never occurred. In the realm of Personal development, nothing is really impossible, because everything is can possibly done.

The Reason Why Self Hypnosis Never Seems to Work

Self hypnosis is an extremely powerful tool when used to help you achieve your goals! Achieving goals, as with anything in life depends on your internal state. You can use the power of self hypnosis to program into your mind a plan for goal achievement and even instil new beliefs and behaviours that will help you reach your objectives. So why doesn’t self hypnosis work for everyone?
Many people fail to get any measurable results from self hypnosis because they are not using it correctly!
The first step you should take when considering using self hypnosis is to know what you want. Although this may sound elementary and a little condescending really consider it. Are you certain, in every deatil, as to how your life will benefit from reaching your goal? Do you know exactly what it is you want to gain from using self hypnosis? Or, do you just listen to a generic self hypnosis session and hope for the best?
For example, listening to a self hypnosis recording for more confidence may be a good goal but how do you quantify confidence? Do you want to be confident around other people or potential mates? Are you seeking to gain more confidence in your job or work-life? Is it really that you want to be more confident about your abilities and therefore it is your self-esteem that you are wishing to build?
For self hypnosis, like any other self improvement technique, to be effective you must use it with a goal in mind! Your goal, for use with self hypnosis, must be precise. You must make it as detailed as possible.
Try writing down a list of things you would like to achieve and then prioritize them. Take your most important desire and turn it into a goal. Write it down. Do it now!
Have you done it?
When you write down a goal you change it from a wish into a statement of intent. With this statement of intent you can program it into your subconscious mind, through self hypnosis, and make it your future reality. This makes your desire real and tangible and no longer a vague wish or dream. By doing this you have just created a powerful self hypnosis goal!
Now that you are clear on what you want and have created your first self hypnosis goal you need to finish this preliminary work before you ever enter a self hypnosis state.
You must now re-write your goal in the present tense as though you already have it. If you have major trouble feeling comfortable writing it in the present tense then write it as though it is in the process of coming true. Do not tate your goal as though it will come to you in the future! Never state what you do not want or include any of the things that you are trying to eliminate!
Your self hypnosis goal must state your intention positively and only include what you want. “I am debt free” is a bad example, for in order to be debt free you must first think of debt! “I am prosperous and wealthy”, is much better as it includes what you do want! “I am no longer uncomfortable in social situations”, is bad as you are focusing on your lack of confidence! “I am a highly confident person who is at ease with others in any situation”, is much more suitable as it states the positive outcome you are seeking!
The subconscious mind works, not in words, but in pictures. This becomes very apparent during self hypnosis. So whatever you do right at this moment don’t think of an elephant! What did you just think of? An elephant! Right?
In order not to think of an elephant your subconscious mind has to produce a picture of an elephant so it knows what you don’t want to think about! This is why it’s very important to never include what you do not want in your self hypnosis goal!
When you use self hypnosis to re-program your subconscious mind with this goal, the mental pictures you form will be automatically positive due to the wording of your goal. So only use positive, goal-affirming statements! Ensure your statements are detailed, positive and to the point. Doing this will force your subconscious mind to create pictures that reinforce your desires and it will use them as as a guide to creating your future!
